The Letter of St James heads up the list of “Catholic Letters”. Over the course of the centuries it has not been commented on to any great extent, probably because it has to do with moral as distinct from doctrinal matters; from the sixteenth century onwards commentators focused mostly on the subject of faith and works (cf. 2:14–26).
